The Sea Is History

Inspired by Derek Walcott’s renowned poem, The Sea Is History reflects on the sea as a living archive of Caribbean identity and memory. In the Cayman Islands, the sea has long been both a source of connection and isolation — sustaining life, shaping livelihoods, and witnessing stories of triumph and loss.

With its rich maritime heritage, echoed in the national motto “He Hath Founded It Upon The Seas,” Cayman’s relationship with the ocean runs deep. This exhibition explores that bond through historical and contemporary artefacts—some mysterious, others well-known—retrieved from the sea, found along our shores, or connected to seafaring life.

Together, these objects reveal how the sea continues to define Caymanian culture, reminding us of both its power and our shared responsibility to protect it.
