Harvey Ebanks

Untitled (Catboats and Cay)

Acrylic and collage on paper

Cayman Islands National Museum Collection

Much like other seafaring men, following the conclusion of his seafaring career, Ebanks documented past moments from Cayman’s maritime industry.

In Untitled (Catboats and Cay), Ebanks illustrates a fisherman in a catboat filled with turtles, with land emerging in the background. A small house, and additional boats further back in perspective suggests that the scene is that of the conclusion of a bountiful day of work and that the fishermen are heading back to land with their catches of the day. Including the house in the background creates an intimate connection between the Caymanian populace and the ocean, which provided society with countless profitable industries and supplied families with the provisions and resources needed for daily life.
