Harvey Ebanks

Untitled (Green Turtles)

Acrylic and collage on paper

Cayman Islands National Museum Collection

Much like other seafaring men, following the conclusion of his seafaring career, Ebanks documented past moments from Cayman’s maritime industry. In his depiction of Green Sea Turtles, Ebanks highlights an abundance of the animals which have remained a mainstay point in Caymanian identity, from iterations of the Islands’ name (‘Las Tortugas’) to the profitable turtling industry. Illustrating the animals without the presence of humans, works to highlight their ongoing significance to the Islands, and suggests the importance of natural conservation efforts to preserve natural flora and fauna for future generations.
